Diabetics must be alert to keep liver complicacies at bay. A research carried out by Edinburgh doctors has found connections between liver ailments and diabetes. Diabetics are prone to develop liver ailments; their risk being 70 per cent higher than their counterparts who aren’t suffering from that life-long ailment called diabetes.

Diabetes can complicate to liver-scarring ailments like cancer and cirrhosis. These complicacies as well as other forms of liver diseases can happen as diabetes affects the naturally inbuilt mechanism to check the sugar level in bloodstream.

This fact has led the researchers to take up for studies the records of 10,100 non-diabetics with that of 1,267 diabetics over a time period of six years from 2002 to 2007. The participants were in the age group of 35-84. The common factor between the two groups is that all of them died of liver diseases. The focal point for the health detectives was to find out the criticality or the probability of the either group to contract the liver complicacies.

The conclusion of the study was: Approximately nine per cent (one in 10) of the non-diabetics died of liver cancer compared to 24% (one in four) of the diabetics. Another significant finding was that fewer diabetics (38%) died from liver diseases connected with alcoholic habits than the non-diabetics (63%).

The Liver: What is it?

Let us now check out the liver. It is the largest internal organ of the human body. Among the vital organs of the body, the liver is unique in the sense that it grows back or regenerates cells that may have been destroyed owing to short-term diseases or injuries.

As a part of the digestive system, it performs more than 500 different life-sustaining functions or metabolism. Basically, the liver aids the body to digest fats, filters wastes and poisons from the blood, stores nutrient reserves, regulates the levels of various chemicals found in the bloodstream, and synthesizes different types of proteins.

Remember the fuel needed during metabolism is the sugar (glucose) contained in the digested food. This sugar is controlled by the hormone insulin secreted by the pancreas.

The liver is also quite sensitive. If it suffers damages repeatedly over a period of time, there may be irreversible changes that in turn may permanently interfere with its normal functioning.

The rate at which American Indians are becoming diabetic has been a cause of major concern. Even as federal measures are under way to address this critical health issue, a mega survey is on to take stock of America’s health and the masses’ use of nation’s health services. The latest results are expected in June, 2011.

The rising trend of diabetics among the indigenous American-Indian population in particular came to the light following the revelation of the field study of this targeted group carried out by the federal Indian Health Services in 2009. This modern-age lifestyle ailment has invaded the teenagers and younger aged as well as the adults. The research results showed that 16.1 percent of the adults among the American Indians were diagnosed with this life-long ailment that is life-debilitating as well. Among the American Indians in the teenage (less than 20 years of age) and younger group, the diabetics accounted for 14.2 percent.

Steps have now been taken to set up a state-of-the art Diabetes Treatment Centre to treat diabetes especially for the community. It will provide a wellness center for tribal members who are diabetic or at various stages of risk to become diabetic. The Centre would also deal with critical complications arising from diabetes like cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and blindness. Various plans have been chalked out for the upkeep of the community’s health requirements for the next seven generations.

The much awaited Diabetes Center of Excellence will be spread over 15,500-square-foot of area on St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. A federal grant of a $600,000 has been awarded to the Tribal Council. It is a share of the $33 million U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Indian Community Development Block Grant program. The ball was set rolling five years back. Solid grassroots support was rendered by the Akwesasne community through fund-risers. Construction work of the facility is lasted to commence this summer.

Among the entire targeted American Indians, the number of such patients was the highest among the Mohawks. It was higher than even the national average. Studies are on to find out the reason for this abnormality among this particular community. According to Janine Rourke, director of ‘Let’s Get Healthy Program’: “They are higher, but we don’t know why… It could be a combination of things, such as a higher risk because of family history of the disease or changes in environment.” The program carries out several other health schemes for the community like the ‘Healthy Heart’ program as well as programs on diabetes education-and-wellness. © diabetessymptomscare.com

This is the moving real-life account of a minor diabetic seeking financial aid as she determines to fight the battle for life against the life debilitating ailment. Living on costly but user-friendly insulin pumps, this 10-year old girl – Claudia Allison – and her mother Angelina will proceed to Downing Street Tuesday for highlighting a postcode lottery meant for patients suffering from this life-debilitating ailment.

The insulin pumps are used instead of the injections. However, the cost factor has come in the way of its access to the majority of the primary care trusts catering to the diabetics. The pumps monitor the levels of blood insulin as well.

According to Angelina, her daughter responded quite well to the pump as “Claudia’s quality of life had been vastly improved with the pump.” As her condition was under control Claudia can now confidently go on “long walks and bike rides”

The Allisons feel that all diabetics ought to be given the option of the insulin pump as it is a much safer option than the injection.

Dwelling on her daughter’s health history, Angelina stated that the day Claudia was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes the news shattered the family members. The news “ruined our family life”. It was in 2008. Claudia would have to take insulin injections four times daily. Every mealtime was preceded by tears. “It was simply heartbreaking to see your child cry four times a day and then to realize that all of it was due to what you are doing.”

The family desperately scouted for alternatives, and finally settled on the insulin pump. But now they had to steadfastly and tirelessly fight to get funding for it.

Angelina Allison is a member of the Diabetes Power, a charity organization. She will visit the Department of Health where she is slated to give a presentation to the Clinical Lead for Diabetes there, Rowan Hillson, on March 30.

THE INSULIN PUMP

With the pump, only one injection was needed after each four days. It entailed the placement of a tube attached to the pump. The sensors of the pump regularly monitor the levels of glucose in the patient’s body besides providing forewarning of potential complications which may be life-threatening. Each insulin pump can be tagged anywhere between £2,000-3,000. The moot point is that depending on the local PCTs, the funding of the pumps varies.

Diabetes is mostly considered as a complex condition. It may be chronic degenerative disease if it continues for a long time. In this case, the patient becomes weak and may die due to malnutrition as the body becomes unable to extract the energy from the food we consume.

Along with the pancreas, other organs- pituitary, thyroid, adrenals and the liver may also involve the failure of maintaining a systematic derangement. Consuming excess starchy and sugary foods may lead to the breakdown of nutritional balance resulting diabetes. Diabetes is mainly systemic in origin rather than failure of any particular organ. It may take long years to develop diabetes.

The most commonly used form of examining the determination of diabetes are- fasting and the post- prandial test which is done after 2 hours of intake of food. The normal sugar content per 100 ml blood should be below 100mg and it can go up to 120mg during fasting. If the sugar content seems to be higher, it is considered to be in diabetic levels. In borderline cases, the fasting sugar content is 110-120 mg and above 130-179mg two hours after meal. In extreme diabetic cases, the fasting blood sugar level can be 120mg and 180mg after two hours of meal.

In the later chapters we shall know more about the complex conditions of diabetes, its diagnosis and treatment to the chronic degenerative disease.

Diabetes or more precisely ‘Diabetes mellitus’ is the disorder when the body, particularly the pancreas, cannot produce ‘insulin‘ — the hormone that converts sugar into heat and muscle power. The pancreas is the organ within our bodies that produces insulin.

DIABETES ATTACKS HUNDREDS DAILY

Hundreds of people fall prey to diabetes. In USA, the number of diabetics has already crossed the 23 million mark.

Diabetes is spreading so fast that the American health department has declared is an ‘epidemic’.

MANY DO NOT KNOW THEY ARE DIABETICS…

Unfortunately, 35 per cent of the diabetics remain unaware that they are suffering from diabetes mellitus. This is because they are unaware of diabetes, not to speak of the symptoms.

Hence, these people do not initiate the steps needed to tackle diabetes. By the time, they seek medical advice, diabetes take deep roots within their bodies with disastrous consequences. In such cases, vital organs can also get damaged.

Therefore, we should be aware of the causes and also the symptoms of diabetes so that we can keep diabetes at bay.

DIABETES, PANCREAS, INSULIN & METABOLISM: INTER-CONNECTED

Insulin transforms the sugar content that we consume into muscle power and also heat needed to carry on the metabolism process.

Metabolism is the process of breaking up the food that we eat into its constituent nutrients to be absorbed into the body. Waste toxic products are produced during metabolism to be eliminated subsequently as stool, urine or sweat.

So, when the pancreas of a person fails to produce the adequate amount of insulin, metabolism suffers. This stage is diabetes.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN DIABETES STRIKES

The body becomes a repository of the already dormant and the newly consumed sugar. This excess deposit of sugar within the body and the inability of the vital organs like the kidney, lungs or the heart to function turn out to be life-threatening in the long run.

The diabetic may become totally blind. He may suffer from blood pressure and other diseases as well.

Diabetes is a medical condition, caused by lack of insulin. It may cause due to lack of chemical process that food, etc into energy and materials for growth and of its hormonic balance. It may be chronic, likely to worsen as time passes by.

Diabetes can also be termed as nutritional disorder or the body’s inability to make proper use of the food due to insufficient production of insulin or its chemical process.

There are specially two diabetic forms: Diabetes Insipidus and Diabetes Mellitus.

Diabetes Insipidus may occur due to deficiency of certain hormones secreted by the posterior part of the pituitary gland. It may happen due to excess loss of fluid by the body. Diabetes Insipidus can be treated by replacement of the deficient hormones.

Diabetes Mellitus is the most commonly called ‘diabetes’ which refers to as ‘too much sugar’ or excessive sugar’. It is characterized by abnormal excessive level of blood glucose or sugar and by the passing of excess glucose in the urine.

The word diabetes mellitus has been derived from the two Greek words ‘passing through’ and ‘sweet as honey’. The word diabetes mellitus was first used by the English physician Thomas Willis in the year 1675 to describe this condition of the chronic degenerative disease.

Diabetes mellitus has been described in the medical texts of Egypt, Rome, Greece, India and China in different ways. The Egyptians associated diabetes with polyuria while the Romans described it as ‘melting down of the flesh and limbs into urine’. On the other hand, the Greeks mentioned it as manifestation of persistent polyuria or excessive urination. The Ayurvedic physicians of ancient India termed it ‘madhumeha’ means ‘rain of honey’. Diabetes mellitus has been well-known by mankind 3,500 years ago and however the Egyptians were the first to record it.

Diabetes mellitus has been a cause to major deaths in most of the countries including India,India has been ranked third for most the deaths by diabetes. In U.S. approximately 1, 80,000 people die every year suffering from diabetes.

In this aspect, Indians are also not safe from the clutches of this degenerative disease. It has been said there were 19 million diabetic patients in 1995 and this number shall be multiplying faster to 57 million by the year 2025. Then, every fifth diabetic patient in the world would be an Indian, in India another form of diabetes can also be found caused due to malnutrition of food specially known as malnutrition – related diabetes.

Research says that among 25 million diabetics, 90 percent are above 40 years of age. It also says that vegetarians suffer less than non-vegetarians. However, diabetes is not only a common disease in the urban areas; the rural areas are also not free from the clutches of diabetes.

In certain cases, persons fond of sweets, the sugar level seems to be higher in the urine. But, this however may not be termed as diabetes. The excess sugar in our body may pass out through urine and as such the sugar level appears to be normal within a very short period of time. Therefore excessive sugar level in the blood and excretion of excessive sugar in the urine may not be termed as diabetes mellitus.
