The research paper of medical detectives in Edinburgh was recently presented at the Diabetes UK Annual Professional Conference. They checked the six-year records of patients in the age group of 35-84 till 2007. In the research, they compared the history of patients – 10,100 non-diabetics to 1,267 diabetics – all of whom died of liver ailments. The startling findings were that one in ten (9%) of the non-diabetics died of liver cancer compared to one in four (24%) diabetics.

It is worth noting that diabetics are generally advised to go for moderate alcohol intake as it leads to weight gain and also increased level of blood sugar. Overweight is a major risk factor that can degenerate to Type 2 diabetes.

The research has come up with another discovery: The percentage of non-diabetics dying from alcoholic liver disease was much higher (63 percent) compared to the diabetics (38 percent).

Stressing on a healthy lifestyle, Dr Sarah Wild of Edinburgh University, said that “a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk and prevention is particularly important because the options for treatment are limited,” and pointed out that “Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has become much more common recently, particularly among people with diabetes. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease increases the risk of cirrhosis which in turn increases the risk of liver cancer.”
