There are three basic types of diabetic medication:

List of Oral Diabetic Medication
Oral diabetes medications are used in the treatment of
type 2 diabetes. Medicines within this category fall within one of several classes, including:
* Biguanides
* Meglitinides
* Sulfonylureas
* Thiazolidinediones
* Alpha glucosidase inhibitors
* Dipeptidyl peptidase inhibitors
* Combination medications.
Biguanides
Metformin (Glucophage®, Glucophage XR®, Glumetza™, Riomet®, Fortamet®) is the only biguanide medication currently available.
Meglitinides
Meglitinides include:
* Repaglinide (Prandin®)
* Nateglinide (Starlix®).
Sulfonylureas
Specific types of these diabetic medications include:
* Chlorpropamide (Diabinese®)
* Glimepiride (Amaryl®)
* Glipizide (Glucotrol®)
* Glyburide (DiaBeta®, Micronase®, Glynase®)
* Tolazamide (Tolinase®)
* Tolbutamide (Orinase®).
Thiazolidinediones (Glitazones)
These diabetic medications include:
* Pioglitazone (Actos®)
* Rosiglitazone (Avandia®).
Alpha Glucosidase Inhibitors
These diabetic medications include:
* Acarbose (Precose®)
* Miglitol (Glyset®).
Dipeptidyl Peptidase Inhibitors
This is the newest class of oral diabetes drugs. Currently, there is only one medication available in the group — sitagliptin (Januvia®).
Combination Oral Diabetes Medications
There is a variety of combination drugs for diabetes available, including:
* Glipizide and metformin (Metaglip®)
* Glyburide and metformin (Glucovance®)
* Pioglitazone and glimepiride (Duetact®)
* Pioglitazone and metformin (Actoplus Met®)
* Rosiglitazone and glimepiride (Avandaryl®)
* Rosiglitazone and metformin (Avandamet®)
* Sitagliptin and metformin (Janumet®).
List of Diabetic Medication — Insulin
There are five classes of insulin available as an injection:
* Rapid-acting
o Insulin lispro (Humalog®)
o Insulin aspart (NovoLog®)
* Short-acting
o Humulin® R
o Novolin® R
* Intermediate-acting
o Humulin N
o Novolin N
* Long-acting
o Insulin glargine (Lantus®)
* Premixed
o Premixed insulin is two types of insulins mixed together in specific proportion in one bottle or insulin pen. There are several types of the NPH and regular insulin mixture (Humulin 70/30, Humulin 50/50, Novolin 70/30, NovoLog 70/30, Humalog 70/30).
Other Injectable Diabetes Medications
